01 Requirements

  • Apple TVtvOS 26.4 or later
  • iPhone & iPadiOS / iPadOS 26 or later
  • MacmacOS 26 or later, Apple silicon
  • ContentNone included — you bring your own
  • AccountNone. Vyn has no sign-up

To play your own films you will need a Jellyfin, Emby or Plex server, or an SMB share on your network. To watch live channels you will need an IPTV subscription of your own — an Xtream account or an M3U playlist address. Vyn supplies neither.

02 Getting started

Vyn opens on a short setup guide. It asks for nothing you have to fetch from elsewhere until the last step, which is where you connect things.

  • A media server. Settings › Sources. Enter your server's address and sign in. Vyn indexes the library once so it can mark, on any poster anywhere in the app, whether that title can play from your own disk.
  • IPTV. Settings › Live TV. Either an Xtream account — server address, username, password — or the URL of an M3U or M3U8 playlist. Vyn imports every category; what appears on your home screen is a separate choice you make afterwards.
  • Trakt or Simkl. Settings › Tracking. Both can be connected at once. Each syncs independently.

Nothing is required. Vyn will browse films and television with nothing connected at all — it just won't be able to play any of them.

03 Reporting a problem

Email hello@vyn.app. A report that includes the following is usually fixed in one exchange rather than four:

  • the device and OS version — Apple TV 4K on tvOS 26.4, iPhone 17 Pro on iOS 26.1;
  • the version of Vyn, from Settings › About;
  • what you did, what happened, and what you expected instead;
  • for a playback problem: the source (Jellyfin, Emby, Plex, SMB, IPTV) and, if you know it, the file's video and audio format;
  • a screenshot or a screen recording, if the problem is something you can see.

Please don't send credentials, server addresses that reach your home network, or IPTV usernames and passwords. They are never needed to diagnose anything, and Vyn's own diagnostic log is written to exclude them for the same reason.

04 Common problems

A title in my library isn't marked as available

Vyn matches your server's items to TMDB. A title your server holds that TMDB has never heard of cannot be drawn, and a series filed under a different episode ordering may not match. Settings › Sources › Rescan Library rebuilds the index and reports how many items it could not match.

A stream won't play

Vyn plays the original file rather than asking your server to make a lower-quality copy, so a file that plays here plays as it was made. If one fails, check that the source is reachable — a sleeping server, a VPN, a local address that only resolves at home — and that it is a direct URL rather than a disc folder or ISO, which needs the server's help.

Live TV shows no programme listings

Listings come from your provider, not from Vyn. For an Xtream account Vyn asks the panel for its guide document, which on a large account is a big download and can take a while the first time. For a playlist, listings come from an XMLTV address the playlist publishes, or one you enter yourself. Settings › Live TV › Programme Guide reports what happened and lets you ask again.

Catch-up or restart isn't offered

Because your provider isn't recording that channel. Catch-up is the provider's feature: the broadcast has to have been recorded at their end for anything to rewind to. Vyn shows the controls only where the provider says an archive exists, rather than offering a button that would fail.

Subtitles are listed but nothing appears

This is usually an older text encoding. Vyn converts subtitle files to UTF-8 before playing them for exactly this reason, so if a track still shows nothing, send the file and it can be looked at.

Audio keeps playing after I leave the app

That is deliberate — background audio and Picture in Picture are supported. Stop playback, or close the Picture in Picture window, to end the session.

05 Questions people ask

Does Vyn come with anything to watch?

No. Vyn is a player for your own media server, files or IPTV subscription. It ships with no content, no playlists and no sources configured.

Do I need a Vyn account?

There isn't one. Vyn has no sign-up, no login and no server of its own.

Where does my viewing history go?

On your devices, and — if you switch it on — into your own private iCloud database. See the Privacy Policy.

Can I use Trakt and Simkl at the same time?

Yes. Both can be connected together and each syncs separately, so a problem with one cannot damage the other's history.

Is there an Android or Windows version?

No. Vyn is built specifically for Apple's platforms.

Will it transcode my files?

Only when a source genuinely cannot be streamed directly, such as a disc folder or an ISO. Otherwise your server sends the original file.

How much does it cost?

Undecided. Vyn is not yet released.

When can I get it?

There isn't a date. The home page is updated when there is news.

06 Your data

Vyn collects nothing. To remove what is stored on a device, delete the app — that takes its database, its caches and its Keychain entries with it. To remove synced data, use Settings › your Apple Account › iCloud › Manage Account Storage.

The Privacy Policy sets all of this out in full, including how to disconnect a single service and how to revoke Vyn's access at a tracker's own end.

07 Accessibility

Vyn is built with VoiceOver labels, Dynamic Type, Reduce Motion and Reduce Transparency in mind, and the player's timeline is adjustable with VoiceOver rather than being a decorative bar. If something in Vyn is unusable with an assistive technology you rely on, that is a bug worth reporting and it will be treated as one. Write to hello@vyn.app and say which technology and which screen.

08 Legal

  • Privacy Policy — what Vyn stores, what it sends, and how to delete it.
  • Terms of Use — the licence, and what Vyn does not include.
  • Copyright & Content Policy — where the media comes from, and where a notice should go.
